What are SVGs?

SVG is an abbreviation that stands for scalable vector graphic. A vector is is one type of graphic that consists of points, lines, shapes and curves. This makes the SVG file different from a PNG or JPEG, which are the two file formats most people are familiar with because they are the most common images you’ll find when doing a Google image search. These file formats store information in a grid of squares known as a bitmap, and they are referred to as raster graphics. Let’s dig a little deeper into SVGs.
Deep Dive into Vectors
As mentioned earlier, SVGs don’t use pixels to make up an image. They use vector data instead. Why this matters is because you can scale an SVG to any size or resolution and it’s not going to lose its quality. Whereas if you zoomed into a PNG or JPEG image, you’ll eventually see the quality downgrade since it is pixel-based. An SVG file is going to look good at almost any resolution.
An SVG stores images as a series of points and lines using mathematical formulas. They are written in a code known as XML. This makes SVGs the preferred choice for websites and web applications, but they are also ideal in the world of crafting when it comes to creating cutting files that can be used on a Silhouette Cameo or Cricut.
Crafting with SVGs
SVGs are the cleanest files you can use with cutting machines, and they are also the most preferred files to use for that reason. When an SVG file is uploaded into the software for these machines, the software is able to locate all the lines and points of the file so that it can tell the machine where to make the cuts.
What’s also great about SVGs is that you are able to edit them easily. When they are imported into the software you are using, you can ungroup the SVG file parts so that you can move around the text or parts of the image. You’ll also be able to add in your own elements and font if you need to manipulate and customize the design.
Cutting machines like the Silhouette Cameo and Cricut allow you to use SVGs to create a wide variety of projects. They can cut vinyl for decals, heat transfer vinyl for T-shirts and they can even cut intricate designs out of paper.
Where to Find Quality Files
You can find SVG files almost anywhere by doing a Google search, but you’ll want to be sure that you download quality files. There are many individuals who will sell SVG files, but they may just simply be traces of other images and they won’t be great quality. The lines might not be straight and you’ll notice that there are lots of bumps and odd cuts when you use them.
Fortunately, Crafty Mother Hustler sells and gives away high quality SVGs in our shop. You can also find SVG files on Etsy, Hungry JPEG or Creative Market. SVGs can really elevate your crafting business and take it to the next level by offering your customers more customized products.
