Find and Research Your Niche

Knowing your niche is important for running a successful business. According to the Oxford dictionary, a niche is a specialized segment of the market for a particular kind of product or service. 

Finding your niche can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be that way. How exactly do you find your niche? Let’s start by examining your passions and interests. After you figure out your passions, then you will be able to really start researching and narrowing down your niche.

Examine Your Passions and Interests

Think hard about all the things that interest you to help you find your niche.

We are all passionate about something. As crafters, we have that one thing that we really enjoy making. Grab a piece of paper and start making a list. Think of all the things that you love making and write them down. You’ll want to have at least 10 passions written down so you can narrow them down to that one that will become your niche. 

If you’re having trouble coming up with interests, then try asking yourself a few questions to help you get the ball rolling. The following questions are a great way to get started:

  • Are there crafts you look forward to doing?
  • What groups or organizations do you belong to?
  • What do you like to learn about the most?
  • How do you spend your free time?

Narrow it Down to Just One to Find Your Niche

After you have your 10 ideas down on paper, then you can start narrowing down your focus. Look at each idea and see if you can figure out what you could make or sell that interests you. For instance, if you wrote candle making down as an interest then think about what types of candles you could or would want to make. There are soy candles, gel candles, paraffin wax candles as well as tarts and wax melts. Do any of these types of candles interest you more than the others? You should go through each idea and make a list beside it of possible products.

If you can’t think of any products that interest you, then cross that idea off your list. Continue going through your list until you end up with just one really great idea. When you have that great idea, you’ll know it deep down in your gut. It’s what sets your soul on fire. Circle that idea because we are going to use it to create a Target Audience in another post.

Don’t Rush Finding Your Niche

If you’re having trouble narrowing it down to one really great idea, put your list away for a few days and come back to it. You can also try to discuss your ideas with friends and family members to see what they think. Sometimes talking about our ideas out loud with others can help us narrow things down more.
